Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON)

In the past few years telecommunication sector was divide into ISP, Telco, MSO/Cable Operators. Reason of these division was type of medium used for delivering the service to subscriber. Bandwidth-hungry service push fiber close the subscriber house. Each telecommunication company start to think about FTTH. Among FTTH (Fiber to the Home) or FTTP (Fiber to the Premises) solution there are few standards as like EPON, GPON and Point-to-Point. Each of these standards has own advantages over other. So there is no ideal solution that can satisfy all. Among them GPON holds biggest market share around the world- especially in Europe. Reason for it is that GPON is consider as upgrade for all type of telecommunication companies. Therefore division between ISP, Telcos and MSO/Cable seems to disappear.

GPON is ITU-T standard G.984.x that origin from FSAN (Full Service Access Network) initiative as it’s successor for APON/BPON that adopt GEM frames for encapsulating Ethernet. GPON was standardized in 2004 since that time Broadband Forum focus on it’s promotion and standardization of interoperability by announcing several initiative as like TR-155, TR-156 etc.

GPON has several advantages:

  • Point-to-Multipoint topology decrease cost of CAPEX compering to FTTH PtP
  • Lower OPEX as power for the ONT’s is fed from subscriber socket
  • Multiple application:
    • Mobile or WiFi Backhaul
    • Passive Optical LAN
    • Broadband solution for business
    • Broadband solution for residential subscribers
    • Industrial Service and Industrial Ethernet application
  • Distance up to 60km with 20km span limit
  • 2488Mb/s download band – twice us much as EPON
  • 1:128 split per OLT port
  • Triple-Play support
  • Smooth and vendor independed upgrade to 10G-PON, XG-PON, NG-PON standards
  • Interoperability

GPON Reach Extenders (RE)

Residential access has to be economical and cost-effective. Aggregating as much subscriber as possible to single chassis is good from management perspective but putting active equipment like Reach Extenders increase both OPEX and CAPEX. What has to be considered is that distance created bigger attenuation so ability to use big split like 1:128 or 1:64 might be impossible. Therfor Operator has to use multiple wavelength which in some cases in impossible or not economical (especcialy if you rent them).

Equivalent for the RE can be compact OLT’s with 4 or 8 ports. That can be connected over CWDM or DWDM (so no whole fiber has to be rent) or even Microwave or Wireless Point-to-Point links.

Fibrain can offer cost-effective compact OLT’s that can work in remote location without any other equipment as they operate as L2/L3 carrier calls device with DHCP, BGP and others capabilities.

Fibrain has 7-years’ experience in deploying and troubleshooting GPON in Europe and Mexico for over 400 customer with total volume shipped till 2016 over 180K ONT’s. We coowork with Operator to study needs of subscribers and prepare solution that will satisfy their demands. We offer several value added services including pre-sales and post-sales support with well-equipped laboratories that can proof our value. Our experience in passive fiber product manufacture for ODN (Optical Distribution Network) and active equipment deployment lead to customer satisfaction and fast Return from Investments.
